A Burke County 911 dispatcher was charged after lending her grandmother’s vehicle to a man with a revoked license, who then wrecked the vehicle and fled the scene.
Samantha Yancey, 22, of Morganton, was charged with aiding and abetting a driver with a revoked license after Aaron Oneil, 27, of Morganton, drove Yancey’s car across multiple lanes of traffic and struck a utility pole, according to a police report.
The Nissan SUV then struck a stop sign on Greenlee Ford Road just before 9 p.m. on Aug. 2, causing enough damage to make the vehicle not drivable after it came to a stop, the report said. Oneil got out of the SUV and got inside another vehicle that had been following him. Neither driver reported the collision.
Officer J.L. Gillstrap with the Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and found a wallet inside the SUV containing Yancey’s ID. Gillstrap asked the communications center for further information on Yancey and was told that she was on duty
