An early Saturday car chase in Beckley is detailed in court documents from the Raleigh County Magistrate Court.
According to those documents, a Beckley Police officer noticed a vehicle driving on Robert C. Byrd Drive in the vicinity of Harper Road without its headlights on.
The officer followed the vehicle for a short distance and then initiated a traffic stop.
Approaching the vehicle, the officer recognized the driver as Rasean Tyrell Smith, 19, of Beckley, from a previous investigation, according to the criminal complaint.
Asking for the appropriate documents, the officer noticed the smell of marijuana and noticed that Smith’s eyes seemed to be glossed over.
According to the court documents, when the officer asked Smith if he had any “weed,” Smith put the vehicle in drive and took off.
A chase ensued down Robert C. Byrd, through city streets where the officer said his car reached 70 miles per hour while Smith’s vehicle was pulling away, until finally stopping at the intersection of Business and Cova streets.
