One of four gang members from North Carolina who drove to Virginia to rob someone in a marijuana ripoff pleaded no contest to murder and firearm charges for his role in the slaying of a Chesterfield County man, who was shot after being drawn out of a storage shed in a botched robbery.
Darrius A. “FreshyBeatz” Ellis, 22, a former L.C. Bird High School graduate who was living in Salisbury, N.C. at the time of the killing, entered his pleas Monday to charges of second-degree murder and felony use of a firearm in the Nov. 21 slaying of Jon-Eric Schwarz IV, 30. In exchange for his pleas, prosecutors withdrew a third charge of attempted robbery.
Chesterfield Circuit Judge Edward A. Robbins Jr. accepted his pleas and set sentencing for Oct. 2. He faces up to 43 years in prison.
Schwarz, who formerly was Ellis’ partner in selling marijuana, was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach about 5:30 a.m. resting against a riding lawnmower near where he was
