Before he spoke in Charlotte at the Bronco Nagurski Trophy presentation, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart updated the status of junior linebacker Natrez Patrick.
Patrick was arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana for the third time just hours after the SEC championship game. On Monday, Smart was asked if Patrick would remain with the team.
“To be honest with you right now, we’re still gathering information and we’ll handle all that stuff when it comes about,” Smart said per Jason Butt of the Macon Telegraph.
According to the UGA student-athlete handbook, a player is dismissed once he accumulates three drug-related arrests.
Patrick and wide receiver Jayson Stanley were arrested late Saturday night in Barrow County when police officers noticed the smell of marijuana coming from their car during a traffic stop.
Earlier this season, Patrick served a four-game suspension after being arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession in Athens. He was also arrested in 2015 with teammate Chauncey Rivers for possession of marijuana.
