Two bills will be presented at the legislation committee meeting Thursday.
One bill introduced by Megan-Ellyia Green addresses the concern of using city resources to amend marijuana laws by lowering or removing jail time for petty marijuana possession.
The other bill introduced by Lewis Reed would reduce fines for anyone who is arrested with 35 grams or less. The maximum fine would be $25, currently the maximum fine is set at $500.
“After much research and many discussions with advocacy groups throughout our City and other cities across the U.S., I felt this was an appropriate and legal way to decriminalize marijuana in our City. We cannot afford to have some individuals in our City losing out on jobs and opportunities because of a small amount of marijuana,” said President Reed
No public testimony is scheduled.
