Three New York residents were arrested in Stafford County on Saturday after one of them tried to make a $68 purchase using fake credit cards and a phony drivers license, police said.
Stafford Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amanda Vicinanzo said a man entered the Kangaroo Express off Garrisonville Road about 6 a.m. and tried to make a purchase. He left in a white vehicle after being confronted about the credit cards.
A deputy who responded to the store ran the license number and learned that it belonged to a dead person. Another deputy stopped the vehicle on Garrisonville Road and found three adults and a young child inside.
Vicinanzo said security footage and the clerk from Kangaroo Express confirmed that one of the passengers, 24-year-old Nnamdi Chijoke Onyeukwu, was the one who tried to make the purchase.
Alexis Curtis, 24, the driver, told detectives that Onyeukwu offered her $150 to drive him from New York to North Carolina and claimed she had nothing to do with the fradulent cards.
