The WVLT team took awards Saturday at the 32nd Annual Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards in Nashville.
At the awards ceremony, WVLT and individual reporters, photographers and directors from the station were honored for the “Rising from the Ashes” Continuing Coverage of the wildfires that took place in Sevier County in November 2016. Local 8 News’ coverage included highlighting the stories of survival and loss that came out of the devastating fires that took 14 lives and forced more than 14,000 people to evacuate Gatlinburg.
In the category of Continuing Coverage – No Time Limit, for which WVLT’s coverage was nominated, other nominations included the story of a teenager reuniting with her family after she was missing for a year, and the story of a synthetic marijuana user, both from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Local 8 News Anchor Amanda Hara won best sports feature for her story, “Nourished by Love.”
The Governors’ Award for Community Service was also awarded to Dolly Parton at the ceremony.
The event took place in the Grand Ballroom of the Music City Center in Nashville.
